I loved that show. I am originally from Brooklyn. Infact, I have an old Welcome Back Kotter card from the 70's on my fridge that says "I won't pledge to the flag, but I will pledge to Brooklyn." Great show.
My favorite character was Barbarino. I'm Italian, too, so he seemed like the guy next door, as dumb as he was sometimes.
Gabe Kaplan, who played Kotter, is now a poker player. I see him all the time on ESPN.

It opened the door for John Travolta (Vinnie Barbarino), and it was very entertaining...which is what you can't find nowadays on any tube.
