"All in the Family" broke ground in television and society, but I wouldn't say that it's the best sitcom ever. A lot of it seems dated now, so younger people might consider it not worth much of a look since some problems have been resolved or the situation has improved. I suppose my favorite character would be Edith, the person who "grew" most during the series.
For all-time sitcom, I suppose I would choose "I Love Lucy" for its longevity and the influence it had on so many series that followed. Fran Drescher of "The Nanny" often commended Lucille Ball for providing inspiration.
Face it: There have been many wonderful sitcoms, but they simply aren't shown anymore; if they are, it's a rarity. Ones I especially enjoy are "Grounded for Life", "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (original, with Mary Tyler Moore), "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Becker", "Newhart" (once it got over its rocky start), "Night Court", "Frasier", "Soap" (one of the craziest of all time), "The Nanny", "Barney Miller", and "That '70s Show".
I meant to leave off "Seinfeld", "Friends", "Mad About You", and other shows I found extraordinarily awful, along with some of those that somehow keep clinging to life. Let's just say that I rarely watch sitcoms anymore. I tried "Carpoolers", "Cavemen", and the one about the amnesiac (Yes, I've forgotten the name thankfully!). They simply aren't worth it.

All in the Family was undoubtedly ground breaking in it's day, but I hardly think it would be ranked as the best sit com ever. I liked Gloria.

bear in suggestions the only episode at the same time as Kelly all started speaking politics and Ted determined that if she might want to comprehend that, he might want to get decrease back in structure and **** the **** out of Peggy? I loved that one!
