What makes the war in Iraq a global concern? The US spends more on weaponry than the rest of the world combined, and there are over a billion muslims on the planet, for one thing. They have long resented our unwavering, unquestioning support of Israel at the expense of the Palestinians, and the US and the Saudis struck a devil's bargain back in 1973 since which time all petroleum sales have been denominated in US dollars.

The role of the US is unusual in that this is by far the largest military involvement by any country so very far from home in a very long time. No other nation has transported hundreds of thousands of troops with all of their equipment thousands of miles around the world to occupy a sovereign nation (without a UN mandate) since we were in Viet Nam. The Soviets shared a border with Afghanistan, as did Israel with Lebanon, Indonesia with Timor, and Iraq with Iran and Kuwait. We have declared that we do not consider ourselves bound by the Geneva conventions vis a vis captives from South Asia and the Mideast. In short, we have stated that the rules we expect other nations to follow do not apply to us. That is significant and disturbing.

Because it shows just how passive and afraid the rest of the world is of the United States and emboldens it to keep up the same mischievous behavior.

The behavior of the United States on the world's stage is not unusual. This country has always behaved in a way that is most detrimental to other parts of the world.

Your questions are slanted to return a negative response about the US and the war in Iraq.

The war should not be viewed as a global concern, but instead the means to an end. Radical Islam wants to kill the western society as we know. The US and our Allies fighting with us are the only nations with the guts to take them on.

The US role is not unusual. Nations from the beginning of time have defended themselves from attack. We must protect our own interest. What other country (except France) would roll over when they are confronted by an enemy?

You may want to start with the fact it is not a war. Tt is an invasion/occupation. Iraq is situated perfectly for the U.S. to protect what it views as our interests in the Middle East.
