Hi.

My husband said he heard that there are 90 billion 11-figure numbers in existence. 90 BILLION!!! Surely he's wrong. Does anyone know? Thanks.

The number is actually much higher. If you specify integers, then that cuts out every number that contains a decimal.

If you're just looking at whole number integers, that sounds pretty good. There are 11 figures in 99,999,999,999 (99 billion, 999 million, 999 thousand, 999). However, you couldn't count all of them since for example at 1 you wouldn't write it out as 00,000,000,001 to have 11 figures. It wouldn't only be 11 figures once you got to the 10 billion number. So, you would start at 10 billion and go up to 99.9999... billion. That gives you about 89.999999... billion or approximately 90 billion numbers.

Of course, if you count decimals...it's completely different!

An 11-figure number would look like this:
--,---,---,---
The highest number possible is 99,999,999,999 - 99 billion 999 million 999 thousand 999

The math for the exact number he gave: The first digit must be between 1 and 9 = 9 possibilities.
Every other digit must be between 0 and 9 = 10 possibilities.
There are 10 digits, each with 10 possibilities.
9*10*10...*10
9*10,000,000,000
90 billion.
