Ride, Rossi and K2 are my favorites - if you are going to get a freestyle board, maybe Nitro, Forum, Lib Tech, Gnu

For you first board, I personally think it is a waste of money to get a Burton board. Burton is good, people just don't like it when everyone says they are the only good board.

Good Luck

Oh for the love!! Where to start...
5150, LTD, Liquid and some others are all the low cheap end of other companies.

I have never ridden a "good" or "quality Rossi board or known any serious rider who has in 14 years. Have broken one though - good thing it wasn't mine lol

K2 isn't just a ski company, they actually make great product, oh and by the way pdx_girl, they own Ride... (so I'm not sure how you say one sucks and the other dosen't since they share much of the same tech.)

As far as it being Crapita.. well that's only if you bought a board with the sliders, also known as freedom groove and others. Those boards DID have problems with binding slide for many people. Other than that though their stuff is pretty bomb proof.

Just because a board uses magnatraction tech - and that's not even a NEW idea or tech, doesn't mean it's actually good... case and point Roxy. In fact, they only JUST revamped all of their boards, yes they put in some better tech and R/D but that is all still to be proven... get me the 100 day results and then I'll tell you if I'd reccomend the board.

Rome makes some amazing boards (and the rest of their product is great too) that perform quite well all over the mountain. Don't think so? Take it up with Transworld Snowboarder and the "GoodWood" kids. (I hear Rome has a bagfull of awards lol)

And for the love of everything DO NOT buy a board just because you like how it looks!! You buy a board because it matches your weight, is the right length & width considering the style of riding you will be doing the most and your age (if you are still growing)

Some good ones worth checking...
Ride
K2
Rome
Nitro
Lib
Gnu
Omatic (and for all you kids who haven't heard, that's the "newish" co started by Tara Dakides and Todd Richards)

for starters the guy who said he likes lamar and 5150 over burton doesn't know a thing about boards.. lamar makes just about THE crappiest boards you will ever find, the only reason you may see a lot of them is because theyr'e cheap, but you get what you pay for when it comes to snowboards. Also 5150 isn't all that much better (very bottom of the line stuff). Depending on how experienced you are you will want to look at different boards. If your just starting off a liquid or lamar might not be a bad choice just incase you decide you don't like snowboarding. On the other hand, if you already know it's something you're going to keep on doing, the burton feather as mentioned earlier is a great board for a girl. Also, look into the girl lines of nitro, forum, ride, k2 and actually roxy has started making some extremely nice boards.. If I were you I would look into some of the roxy boards w/magna-traction, it will really make everything a whole lot easier for you. Don't look at lib or rome unless you really want to ride just park.

I hear a lot of good from Rome for there park boards. k2 makes good stuff too. I hear good about Lib Tech too. There are mixed reviews about Ride. Nitro is okay. I hear a lot of bad about Capita though (Cr@pita). Burton by no means is bad. Just overpriced sometimes. There warranty is untouchable for the most part too. They are the biggest company out there for snowboarding so they can support their warranties better.

For your first board, I don't think you should get a Burton. There lower lines are overpriced I think. k2 would be a good place to start.

Edit: You know nothing about snowboarding's past if you say Burton is the original. Sims and Winterstick was out before Jake started Burton.

About Capita, I still hear they are crap, but some people seem to like the Stairmaster, but that seems like a hardcore park board. And seeing as how you're asking about boards, you don't venture into the park often, if at all.

Who cares is those companies are ski companies? k2 has been in the business (of making SNOWBOARDS) longer than most "core" snowboard companies. Jeeze. My friend rode a Rossignal last season, and it was newer than mine, but had about the same flex, and I think mine was lighter.

Burton boards are pretty good. people say their boards are not good because they probably get the wrong type of board for what they are doing. if you are gonna get a burton board just do some research and see which boards match your style of riding. the many burton boards i have had have all been amazing.

other board companies that are good:
Forum
F2
K2
Logic
Never summer.

look into the "never summer sl" board. i have 6 boards and it is by far my favorite board

I have a Burton board and I've always liked them.

Lib Tech has good boards and so does LTD. I've rode all three of those brands and Burton is by far my favorite though. It really depends on what kind of riding you plan to do.

um. ik lots of people that say burton is a bad brand. but actually they are very good, it's just because they stated the whole sport, people think they are nazi. but actually they put in alot of reasearch into developing girls boards, its just most of the other companies take it from them (so i hear)

I have a bruton feather and its a really nice board! and if you're just going to do it for the ride, and youre not into ride parks and stuff like that i would recomend the feather, it's cheaper and it's nice! mine was new for only 300

I think Rossingal is really good (sry, might not be spelled quite right!). I know a lot of people would agree with me. If you want a good sale, go to after thanksgiving sales. you can get boards 1/2 off or more which is a really good price because you can never find that kind of deal on boards.
