You're more careful with what you've earned. Make 'em buy it.

Back in the "Dark Ages" (1974) when I was nearly 16, I paid $300 of my own money for my first car. Most of my friends and classmates had to buy their own way back then. Our parents did not have the money available to purchase their cars, pay mortgages, and support themselves and us on the incomes back in the 1970s. I believe we took care of our vehicles because we paid for them. If we wrecked them, then we had to go without transportation. We appreciated what we had. Children today expect their parents to buy them brand-new Camaros and Mustangs. What's with that? They need to pay for at least half of a dependable used car (old and ugly, but runs).

make them buy it for themselves so they have a good reason to know how to work...
My parents bought me a very cheap car ($600) and then made me pay the repair, gas, insurance, and fees. I was a very responsible young adult.
Many young adults wouldn't it do this! Make them pay or walk!

i turned 16 in august and my grandpa bought my car. im not some spoiled rich kid and i feel bad because i would prefer to buy my own car because i would be proud of what i worked for but it would be impossble for me to. I live with just my dad and he has to constantly work. i really want to get a job but i cant until i get my license because he has no time to drive me to work. So you have to realize that some kids cant buy their own car. but i am paying for insurance, gas, etc...

I am undecided on this one. I had to pay. But had my parents been rich, I would have much preferred to put the time in to studies as opposed to working on a job.

It depends.. Are they a hard worker or a slacker? If they are a hard worker I would buy them a car but have them pay fro gas. If they are a slacker I would have them pay for everything.

I don't know. Maybe I'll buy me daughter a huge SUV and give her $5.00 for allowance. The thought of my son driving scares the hell out of me.
