Oscar is a grouch, which is a special kind of monster. Cookie monster is just a type of monster that loves cookies. I don't know about Elmo. He's so cute but I don't think they ever said what he is.

Elmo and Cookie Monster are both "Monsters" Oscar is a "Grouch"...he comes from Grouchland. If you watch, Elmo quite often refers to himself and his friend Zoey as "Cute little Monsters"...Sesame Street put "Monsters" on the show so little kids would think that monsters were nice, not scary.
