My 2½ year old son L-O-V-E-S the music video for the song "Grace Kelly" by the singer/songwriter "Mika". There have been speculations as to the sexuality of said musician and he has declined to clarify (basically, he refuses to identify as gay, straight, bisexual, whatever).

After hearing from MANY many people on this site that dressing a male child in a Halloween costume which does not conform to the stereotypical clothing style associated with his gender may "turn him gay" or "psychologically scar him", I have to wonder if people also consider music videos containing "possibly gay" recording artists to be, like the Halloween costume, a "catalyst for gayness".

Here's a link to the music video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uzA0nG_PurQ

Of course I know that the answer is "no". It was an experiment. I thought perhaps I'd receive just as many vitriolic responses as my "Halloween costume" questions, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

First of all a costume can't make ur child gay no matter what it is just a little embarassed. Second neither can a music video perfomed by a bi, staright, gay, drag, etc. artist and if ur child was gay it shouldn't matter. Also peice of advice you can't turn anyone gay. Being gay is a feeling that is natural to everyone including u it is love, just gay people find it in the same gender soooooooooooooooooooo what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was raised by two gay mothers and me and my brother are as straight as a ruler. So again u can't turn gay!!!!!!!!!!! ok!

I believe that the current thinking on this matter by the psychology establishment, is that sexual orientation is a genetic determination.

That is, if one is gay, male or female, that, essentailly is that: no ifs ands or buts. To put it more straight foreward, you are born gay or straight.

The question of nurture - whether encouraging ones child to be this or that - will either advance or retard the child's ultimate realization of whether they are gay or not, is open to debate.

But whether he is or is not, there is nothing that you or anyone else can do to change him.

He can be gay, but if forced by familial influence to repress and/or deny it, will not change his orientation. He may grow up and marry and have children, but this in no way means that he is not gay. It just means that he will never really realize who and what he is, and will probably become a very unhappy individual.

Dressing a young child in dress that is offensive to them, will probably "scar" them psychologically. So, it would definately be a "no" "no".

But why are you so concerned? It's really too soon for him or you to determine whether or not he is gay, or isn't.

In any case, he's your son, and I'm sure that you love him. The best thing for him, for you to do, is to accept him for whatever his sexual orientation may turn out to be; and support him in it.

No matter which he is - gay or straight - there is nothing you or anyone else can do to change that.

Just love him for whoever he is,

Wotan

gosh, most children's programming with live actors would be considered "gay" by adult standards. Why? Because they are musical and colorful and fun- just the things that attract toddlers. You cannot turn your child gay, he has to be born that way. Let your child have some fun. I loved cars and GI Joe action figures as a kid (I was totally a tomboy) but I'm not a lesbian. Maybe it just shows he has a good ear for music and will be rock star when he is older?

that's what they said with placebo! but brian molko is so awesome ♥♥♥

no, it won't. children don't have much of an idea of sexuality at that age, and even if he did copy mika (like, WHY would you want that?) there's no way he would copy or even be aware of his sexual orientation. it isn't a 'copied' thing.

trying to condition a child into stereotyped gender roles will only make him a male chauvinist, if anything at all. that's how it would scar him.

everybody loves that video anyway (apart from me), i don't see what your problem is really. and if mika hasn't clarified his sexuality, it's because he doesn't need to, is it really that important? there is no social "catalyst for gayness", you either are or you aren't. please just let him be, and stop being so paranoid about children being gay (repression? i don't know.).

it's just a music video.

take care

Didn't watch the video, but its highly doubtful. I would be more concerned if the music stinks, and if the kid is always watching TV and doesn't care about reading!

Sexual orientation is not synonymous with gender identification. I think psychological "scarring"/confusion/dysfunction is more likely to result from a child being told that curiosity about any non-violent topic (in the realm of discussion!) is "wrong" and therefore must be kept secret. Also, what is considered to be "gendered" clothing or interests varies according to the time period and culture.

o my lord. are you serious?! clothing doesnt turn people gay, music/musicians doesnt turn people gay. clothing for a specific gender is only defined by society. for example, pink for girls, blue for boys, but did you know that about 60 yrs ago it used to be the other way around and people used to dress boys in pink and girls in blue. its a society standard that everyone feels the need to conform to. its rubbish. just cos you've heard people say it happens doesnt make it true. they're just looking for a reason to explain homosexuality. good for mika. why should he be pigeon holed into a specific sexuality?! whats the difference whether he's gay or bi or straight. your son is only two. let him be a kid, and if he grows up straight or gay, you should love him regardless, nothing you can do will turn him either way.

WE ARE BORN GAY.
I knew I was "different" when I was 2 or 3 years old. I used to cross dress at age 3. When I was 4, 5, I idolized Boy George, and my parents were freaking out, they thought that me liking him would turn me gay....too late, I already was. I also had a crush on George Michael, lead singer of Wham!, who we all now know is gay, when I was age 5. At age 6, I discovered Madonna, and used to emulate her, I'd play her music and pretend I was her, dancing on stage.

Yes, I was perfectly straight as a arrow until I watch a Prince video back in the 80's. Unfortunately, watching manly country music videos didn't cure me. It just made me bisexual. I can only imagine what would happen to my poor impressionable brain if I watched a Marylin Manson or Barney & friends video.

I don't believe that watching a video can 'turn' a child gay, but I don't think it is a good idea for children this young to watch music videos. I have a child that just turned three and I don't allow her to watch music videos.
