Have an eMachines S2482. Dead - no power, pulled out the supply, definitely toast. Replaced with a 500w. Still won't come on. The new PS fan will not come on either. From reading answers, I gather the next step is the motherboard. My question - if we replace the MB, will I need to reinstall the OS, and will the recovery CD's do this? Thanks!!!

With all the components unplugged, the (new) PS fan doesn't come on - does that means it's no good? We hear it has power, as in a barely audible hum, but fan doesn't come on.

Haven't checked the switch (yet) because the old PS was definitely burned - brown spot and plastic flaking of one of the little dealies (capacitor??). But the new PS fan should spin just being plugged in to the wall only, right? It is not...

i think, the power supply may have burned out your board, but to be sure, unplug everything on the board, expansion cards,CD drives, floppy drives, (except the power switch and power supply) and see if it comes on.if it does,
plug the devices in one at a time, and after you plug one in that stops the PC from coming on, that might be the trouble maker. and for you OS, you may need to reinstall, but the recovery disk might work.

Hope this helps

Hi. Check the wall plug first just in case. The MS OS will compare the hardware you have now with what you had before and stop if it finds too much difference. You may luck out and the machine will boot from the C drive. If not, reinstall the OS.

You won't have to replace the OS but you may need new chipset drivers for the motherboard. The cd will come with the board.

I've had a couple of e-'s where the ps didn't burn out but the standby voltage jumped to 12v instead of 5v. It took out the mb and I had to get a new cpu (since it's hard to get the old sockets) and memory too.

Have you tried unplugging the power button from the motherboard and shorting the two pins with a screwdriver?

You may just have a bad power switch.
