Because according to Burke, no legitimate offer came his way.

Burke wanted to possibly sign Bryz to an extension and then trade him, but the Bryz camp only wanted to talk contract with whatever his new team would be.

Burke didn't want picks, he wants young players who can step into the line-up within the next 12 months.

Over the past several months, Burke has held conversations with several teams, and on a couple of ocassions thought he had reached a deal with Tampa Bay, however, the first time around, the ownership change in Tampa scuttled the deal, and as recently as mid-October, the teams couldn't agree on which players Burke would accept from Tampa.

The emergence of Niedermayer skating again has forced Burke's hand and getting rid of Bryzgalov is being seen as a way of possibly getting Selanne under contract for this year as well (Niedermayer's already under contract)

Note:
Niedermayer already counts against the cap. so they aren't freeing up room for him

some thoughts based on circumstance

1. It is obvious he tried, c'mon . . . he probably just didnt get a legit offer in return

2. Hiller is in the eyes of the ducks capable of putting up reasonably similar numbers.

3. Freeing up of cap room (especially if scotty is coming back) seems to be part of the equation, possibly to afford a top 6 forward which they need even once bertuzzi is back.

b/c it's tough to trade a ufa who has the right to split after the season is up.

No good offers came Burke's way.

because Ilya Bryzgalov sometimes does better then gigure and they want to see what he can do for one more year because next yer he is a free agent and they want to see if they want to still sign him again.

Burke tried but there were no takers due to his salary and he is also a free agent after the season.
