Since the fall of the Berlin Wall the reunited Germany has adopted the system of government which previously existed in the West, that is, a federal republic with a democratic government. The official title of the State is the same as that previously applied to the West: Bundesrepublik Deutschland i.e. Federal Republic of Germany.
The central government consists of two elected chambers, the lower being called the Bundestag (Federal Parliament) and the upper the Bundesrat (Federal Council). Before the reunification these only governed the West and were housed in Bonn; since reunification they have moved to the old, renovated Reichstag building in Berlin and govern the whole reunited Germany.
The central government deals with matters like foreign policy, the treasury and defence while powers to govern education, the police, some aspects of transport policy and other local affairs are devolved to regional states known as Länder (plural: the singular is 'Land'). These are based more or less on the principalities and kingdoms which existed in the former German Empire before the original unification of 1871 under Wilhelm I and Bismarck.
