Hi All

This year we seem, here in SW Ireland, to have been plagued by loads more flies than usual. Flies of all types, large and small! But a lot of them left patches of black speckles on things (lampshades, windowsills, floor, ceiling, you name it!). I take it this is them sicking up; anyone have any knowledge of this phenomena? Is it some kind of regurgitation? Or is it faeces. It's really tarry, if it dries hard is difficult to get off.

I'd love some proper David Attenborough info on this!

Thanks in advance.

I can see for certain that it's speckles of actual dried black substance; it's definately not larvae or anything living. It's like small spots of eyliner or matte black paint.

Also, if it's poop - it must come out under pressure! Otherwise, how can they get it on the ceiling?!

Its faeces, like you, we are plagued with it, more so this year than any other. It can be removed with a damp cloth and elbow grease.

It's been exactly the same phenomenon in England. I hate those speckles that leaves my home forever dirty whenever visitors call. I have assumed it's poop! Even when they are attached to the ceiling the flies can still leave their minute sticky mark without it droping off, with gravity. No D Attenborough expertise on this of course!
I have only managed to remove the patches on hard surface with general cleaner but materials and walls are often spoiled!

I;m not an entomologist, but my best guess is its larvae/eggs.Flies usually re-eat their own regurgitation. You need to find their source of what attracted them, and remove it.We just had a bout with gnat fruit flys. They seem to multiply rapidly,so we got out the vacuum cleaner sucked 'em all up,and dumped them out side...best of Luck!

I had the comparable difficulty at artwork and now at residing house by using my dad making selfmade wine with some hand picked grapes that we delivered residing house at some point from a farm. Heres an ordinary, low priced way which you will get rid of them by ability of merely utilising some enjoyed ones products. with the intention to get rid of those issues, be certain which you do not bypass away any nutrients out interior the open by ability of putting them in packing containers. extraordinarily with culmination for the reason that they rot quicker in room temperature and it will provide them a place to reproduce. Fruit flies do not stay for extremely long, yet nutrients out interior the open is mostly a good breeding floor for them and you will locate them develop exponentially. 2nd, you will need something with a narrow beginning up; that way they gets in truthfully yet have a greater durable time getting out. Then placed 2 packets/ 2 teaspoon of sugar in it, fill quite decrease than 0.5 of it with apple cider vinegar (not distilled or it won't artwork), and a few droplets of dish cleansing soap. Make notwithstanding many you opt for and placed them interior the not ordinary areas. in case you have not something with a narrow beginning up, you ought to use a paper/plastic cup that's been wrapped with saran wrap with some holes poked in it and a rubber band to maintain it in place, or you could placed a funnel over a jar. And in case you have not have been given any apple vinegar, something candy will do like wine, champaign, beer, even sugary water crammed with a bite of fruit; that's what attracted those issues to my residing house interior the 1st place. as quickly as that it completed, sparkling! on an identical time as the fruit flies may well be long gone, it would not recommend that their eggs are not. Fruit fly eggs at the instant are not ordinary, and in case you do not sparkling the residing house, you're able to locate them back back ten days later (that's the gestation era of the egg). Use bleach or ammonia to bathe your place and a vacuum with a hose to get to those nook areas. do not forget to take out the rubbish by using fact it is likewise a breeding floor for those products. have faith me, this works fairly properly. I fairly have completed this not that some time past and placed it on the source of the difficulty, and 5 minutes later it became swarmed with stay, and ineffective, fruit flies. Or while you're fairly impatient, make the cup version, do not saran wrap it, wait slightly for them to swarm to it, then take a bottle of Raid and spray like loopy. :) desire this enables!

It might be droppings.

But look closer-if the speckles are moving they might be snow fleas, little springtail insects, that are unrelated to your fly plague.
