i'm about to apply to graduate school...like everyone i have the choice to either stay in-state or out-of-state. the thing is i think it would be better for me to stay in state and also near my home for financial reasons [because come on tuition is not the only thing i'll be paying and for graduate programs you will have to take loans]. but people keep telling me to go out-of-state and just get a bigger loan and just pay it later...that sounds good but for some reason it seems irresponsible to me..i dont know maybe i'm over-thinking about this...what would YOU do if you were in my shoes???

So you could spend ten years of your life paying off your loans, or you could pay TWENTY years of your life paying off your loans. Why people think this is the same thing, I don't know.

If there's a good grad program in your fields in your state, I say, do that.

It's not so much irresponsible as foolhardy. Do you really not want to be able to buy anything fun for twice as long a time?

You don't say what reasons they give for studying out of state. But, if you pay off your loans, you can always travel with your future salary. And you can work in another state when you're through with your studies.

The purpose of grad school is study. If there's a program that would really be best for you elsewhere, or someone you can't resist studying under, then go there. But if you'd get what you want and need as far as your studies in state, do that.

I am in a similar situation. It is better to stay in state for the obvious financial reasons. The only reason to go out of state is for a specific school or to "get away from home". You don't need to go out of state to get away from home though. Plus, you want to be somewhat familiarized with the area you'll be going to school in. I would stay in state. Don't let others pressure you into something that holds such a high financial risk/burden.

I'd stay in state...why have more expenses hangin the balance? When you have a choice use your best judgement....you are the one who is going to be paying those loans back....and it isn't fun when they roll around every month. Temptation to roamp and roam are also more so further away from home. Keep your head about...foolishness does not pay off in the end......then you are saying Oh hindsight....in state.

YOu sound smart and you don't want to add a lot more financial burden to your life. Stay in state and do what you think is best. You will be the one paying the bill not your friends.
Good luck on school.

The purpose of graduate school is to broaden your experience and widen your education. Staying at home won't do this as well as going far away and having to depend on yourself. You might even look into a graduate program in another country.

You definitely know what you should do, in state is the best choice.
In the long run do you really want to be paying off a bigger loan?

I would stay in-state because who knows what your financial situation will be like later. The less bills you accumulate for yourslef, the better off you are. Please listen to what your mind is telling you. I know you will miss some of your friends, but if they care about you like they claim to, then they will make time to come see you (I suppose the "people" you are talking about are your friends, lol).

I think you should be listening to the person who will have the live your life and pay off your loans.
You! Life is always easier if you have less debt to pay back.
And no, you're not over thinking this. You are making decisions about what you want your future to be like.

I would stay in-state, like you said--do the responsible
thing. Think of all the money you won't have to pay back.

God Bless You in your decision.
