you counted to 3, then shoot.
yes they were legal with a good reason
yes they could go to jail, if there wasn't a good reason to kill someone.

Go against each other back to back, both take X amount of steps forward counting aloud, then once a certain number comes, turn around and SHOOT

It was legal / no one went to jail if both consented. Yep, it was anarchic back then in the wild wild west.

you just stand at opposite ends and shoot first. if you get shot you loose! and the winner doesnt get taken to jail
