im thinking of puttin bamboo on one side of my house about 30ft away for shade from the mid-day sun but a friend of mine told me that it draws alot of birds and insects

There is no problem with insects or birds but there is a problem with bamboo. Please don't plant...you will be so sorry. Bamboo is one of the plants heading the list of most invasive plants in this country. It is beginning to be as bad as purple loosestrife. Bamboo spreads wildly and once you plant bamboo, you will have it everywhere. It will engulf your property and move on to the neighbor, etc etc. You might want to look up invasive plants on the US Department of Agriculture's website.
