Because they didn't want what we now have: a behemoth, out-of-control, unmanageable, corrupt federal government with too much power and influence over citizens' lives.

The larger any organization, corporation or government gets, the less manageable it becomes and the fewer people benefit from it.

Government - by design - needs to be small. Realistically, we should cut 90% of the federal government's power and budget. Unfortunately, about 90% of what our federal government does today is outside its Constitutional authority. -RKO- 11/17/07

They didn't ever want the United States to in any way resemble a monarchy. They believed that if the power in the country resided in the people of the various states, then their vision would have a chance of success.
If you have a strong central government, then the temptation to eliminate diffuse power, and consolidate all the money and resources to a few people, becomes almost irresistable.
Power corrupts---Absolute power corrupts absolutly.

We are seeing the damage in the loss of our freedoms daily.

confident. The anti-Federalist farmers and tradesmen feared a reliable government controlled by way of Federalist bankers and retailers. it is why they demanded concessions in the form and a bill of Rights they authored be appended.

just take a look at our federal government today and you'll have your answer...power hungry bureaucrats that keep taking more and more power, regardless of the constitutionality of it...plus, to pay for it you have now a Huge tax burden on the people who produce and work in the country.
