I budget about € 100 per day, just for myself.
For that money I can stay in a cheap hotel or in a hostel, eat out modestly, go to museums and sights, and I travel by train most of the time.
If I wanted to do serious drinking I would have to skip all sightseeing and cook my own dinners or budget at least € 150 per day.
It is not hard to find hotels costing you €100 per day, nor is it hard to spend that much on a dinner in a fancy place.
And if you like shopping there is no limit.
I would say, plan to bring twice what you would use in the USA or Australia, and budget yourself from that. Keep your spending in check, and go for cheaper options, or skip the 'fun' for a couple of days, so you can eat all your trip.

NO!! I went to Europe for a month and took $2000. And I ran out of money. If you don't want to carry a lot of cash on you, make sure you have a debit or credit card that will work abroad. Also, even though you think you will be eating cheaply, in some countries ie: England, France, food is very expensive. I would bring more than $2000.00, better to have more than less! have a good trip

I would say roughly 50-100 euro a day...there are train passes you can get to save you on your travel money, and hostels are pretty cheap for the most part...it really depends on what you want to do while in Europe. Food will most likely be the most expensive thing. This summer I saw lots of the summer backpackers who just brought tents and if money started to get tight they slept under the stars on nice nights to save cash...the weather is very nice here in the summer...
Good luck to you...it's a once in a lifetime thing to do, I would recommend it to anyone.
