I have a Macbook and I was wondering if this router would allow me to use internet. It would be downloaded to a Dell, but my mac would share the connection. Is this possible?

You can configure your wrt54g to serve DHCP via the web interface. if you got the thing from somebody or at a garage sale, plug it in and poke a ballpoint pen in the tiny hole labeled "reset" for ten seconds, and then let go. That will restore the thing to factory defaults.
String your connections up :
Wall --> Modem (from your dsl or cable provider) --> WRT54G ---> both the dell and the macbook via wired or wireless.
connect wirelessly to the strongest "linksys" unencrypted signal you can find. or via a cable to one of the 4 ports available on the back.
Open your web-browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
The default login is to leave the username field blank, and enter the password "admin" no quotes. That will get you inside. The web interface is very straight forward. Factory default is to serve dhcp to up to i think 50 machines, so you really only have to do your wireless security config from the interface.

I assume you are changing the internal IP address that the router gives to the computer and also you seem to be using fixed IP addresses rather than dynamic. That type of change will not affect your logon. What affects the logon would be the SSID (router name) and the security key. In changing those you would have to give these to your computer again.

You do not download a router to anything. Routers are stand alone, as such they need no software, work with any OS and just rely on network connections from each machine to the router.
