Yes indeed the VDB stands for Victor D. Brenner the designer of the Lincoln cent 1909-1958. His initials appear on the reverse of some 1909 cents. They were then taken off and not restored to 1918 but put on the obverse.. The Lincoln cent was also the first cent to have the motto In God We Trust on it. Your cent should have the VDB on the obverse and FG on the reverse for Frank Gasparro who designed the Lincoln Memorial reverse 1959 and up. The reason the VDB was taken off was the mint people were mad that an outsider designed the cent and complained the VDB was to large. They said Brenner over stepped his bounds. The chief engraver then was Charles E. Barber and in order to shut him up Teddy Roosevelt had to use his Presidential pressure.

The Lincoln Cent Was the first regular U.S. Coin to protray a specific individual. It was introduces in 1909 to memorialize the centennial of Lincoln's birth. The portait of our 16th president was designed by Victor David Brenner, whose initials V.D.B. have appeared since 1918 as minute letters on the truncation of the shoulder.

In 1959 Brenner's Original reverse design was replaced in recognition of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The new reverse shows the Lincoln Memorial and is the work of Frank Gasparro. His Initials FG appear at the lower right corner of the building.
