When something is hot & you're holding it you want to drop it or get rid of it. Just like when something is stolen, you want it to leave your hands as soon as possible & get the cash for it.

Because its freshly stolen so theres a LOT of interest in it
and if your caught with it, ouch, Jail time.

Might be because the thief dosen't want to hold on to it for very long,like we don't want to get into contact with hot water for a long time because it will burn and leave marks.

It comes from phrases ... "TOO HOT TO HANDLE"
meaning someone who stole it wants to get rid of it.

also phrase "IN HOT WATER" meaning bad place to be or
in trouble for being bad
