It's not a question of us not knowing what is best for us. The problem is that a significant number of people in this country have been brainwashed into believing that their interests lie in the afterlife and not what is going on here and now. An even more frightening amount believe that their reward in the afterlife (i.e. the second coming, heaven on earth, etc.) is coming soon - many believe the second coming of Christ will occur in the next 50 years. So their behavior reflects what they consider to be their best interests. . . to be one that God calls up in the rapture to be with him when he makes heaven on earth. Because of this, making concessions on health care, working conditions, progressive social advances, civil rights, privacy, freedom, etc., etc., are all worth it if they are soon to be rewarded by God for their loyalty.

So it doesn't take Karl Rove, Dick Chaney, George Bush or any evil genius to figure out how to take more and more from average people and give it to their rich friends. . . Convince them that they are on your side - on God's side. Keep people's eyes on heaven and they'll never notice that you're stealing their life right out from underneath them. Pair that with an outdated education system (a socialized program that the republicans have been picking away at for years!) and you have a fairly uneducated populas that is easily manipulated. It's like a kidnapper that takes a child and then brainwashes them into believing that they are really a protector. The child will believe it and stay loyal to the abuser forever.

But 2 things give me hope for my country. One is the greed of the people in power. They always tip their hand and it's never going to be enough. It never is for people who have power. Eventually they will be so brazen that they will turn on their own base (it's already starting). I've always known that all this administration really cares about is money and power and the rest is just for show. And believe it or not, the so called Christian majority in this country DOES NOT speak for most of us - they are just aligned with the truly rich and powerful temporarily so it gives the impression they represent the majority. And second, the power of the internet will always give people a voice. Cheap computers will be as important to modern day social uprising as the printing press.

Okay, off my soap box. Please don't give up on us "intelligent humans" in the U.S. Like in Dr. Suess's 'Horton Hears a Who'. . . "We're Here! We're Here! WE'RE HERE!!"

and I'm assuming YOU know what's best for us. Please why don't you become the king of America, then YOU could tell us what's best for us.
