Touch tone or DTMF (Dual tone modulated frequency) is a combination of two different frequencies. The is a distinct frequency for each row and column of buttons on a phone keypad. When you press a 6 you get the frequencies of column 3 and row 2 mixed together.

Your cell phone would have to transmit DTMF inorder to be able to use automated telephone services like voice mail commands etc.

What you hear on your cell phone will depend on your phones settings and wether or not its connected. Dialing a number might just result in a single tone beeps, once connected the DTMF tones kick in. OR your phone always produces DTMF.
