I keep hearing a baby cannot overeat..blah blah blah.

Mine did, now she eats cereal and at least does not throw everything up.

But she eats 8-9 ounces of formula AND cereal (her pedi put her on it) AND she still wants food!

The little baby bowls...I put enough cereal to just fill the bottom and she will eat ALL of that (like a pro, no spitting it back out, she got the spoon thing down great!) AND 8-9 ounces of formula and will STILL be hungry!

She is 5 weeks, 10 lbs (was 6 14 when she was born at 39 weeks gestation).

I am also afraid that when I start lactating again (practicing re lactating currently and waiting for the milk to come in) that my milk just will not be enough for her because it is thinner and she already eats sooooo much!

What should I do? Most of my friends babies who are 6 months old or more eat less than her...she is so tiny, where does it all go?

And if a baby wont overeat..then what the heck is my baby doing? lol

Her pediatrician put her on the cereal because she was taking too much formula. She was trying to take 9 ounces an hour and then throwing it up. Putting the cereal on her belly helped make it feel fuller so she would not keep throwing it up.

s7e28w81: Tell her pediatrician and NICU doctor that. They BOTH recommended it for her.

If the doctor put her on the cereal, then perhaps feeding her a bit more of the cereal would help her feel fuller longer. Talk to your doctor. There is also an eating disorder that shows up in small children where they cannot feel full. You may ask that your doctor screen for this. I don't know what it is called but it can be very devastating. Hopefully, all she needs is a bit more cereal. Good luck.

Why are you feeding cereal to a 5 week old baby? Your breasts will make up for the demand, it's a supply and demand deal. It might take a few days, but your body will work itself out to accommodate little one. Don't supplement with formula if it isn't working out, good thing you are re lactating...:-)

Erm from what i know, isnt 5 weeks too young to be feeding your baby rice cereal?! Im actually quite shocked to hear that as here in the UK we are not allowed to give babies anything but milk till they reach atleast 18 weeks! and they say that because their digestive system isnt ready for that yet and they need all the nutrition from the milk in the early stages.

give her breast as much as you can tolerate, and if your doc put her onto rice, it is good. it is not too early. She will puke back tooo much formula, esp that faty or sweat crap, so aviod it. You have a healthy active baby-- Class
A personality moms usually have class A cubs so get ready and get braced.. You might want to consider adding tiny portions of pureed veggies-- i loved spinach and sweet potatoes.. so said mom.

the doctors know best really....when i was born i suffered from colic really bad and my mum was advised to put me on baby rice when i was around 4/5 weeks old (that was advise 25 years ago!) and they aint nothing wrong with me..
how ever is your baby hungry or thirsty?? have you tried cooled boiled water instead of formula?

however you can only go on the advise from a pro if thay say it ok it must be!!

good luck x

Your child is too young for cereal at this time. Babies gag reflex is not developed now, and contrary to what was suggested years ago, it is not suggested now. Not to mention, her/his digestive system is not ready for cereal now. Formula or breast milk is all a baby should be getting.

Why in the world would you give a 5 week old rice cereal???? You need to speak to the child's doctor about all of this. If you give rice cereal to your child before they are ready, you could do some damage. Please, please, see their doctor and talk about this with them.
