Well, for the sake of mythology...

Merwomen lays the eggs and the Merman sperms the eggs.
Once they hatches, th Merwomen takes care of the tadpole-like creature until they mature into Merkid.

That's all Mer-folks.

Mermaid legends are based on the real creatures dugongs or manatees.

Apparently they are somewhat similar to humans, in that they have a vagina placed at the front like a humans (not toward the back like most mammals) and have breasts much like human ones (although small, withered and brown in appearance).

Desperate sailors, who had been long at sea, did mate with them - they are extremely docile and loll around in warm shallow water. Presumably it would have been like having sex with a very large, grossly obese, hideously ugly and deformed, extremely retarded human female.

Of course no offspring could come from such pairings.

It would have been forbidden to write about such acts in the books of folklore. Also the seamen only ever saw them on the surface as they thought it would have been unlucky to be able to swim.

I suspect that they probably mate like any other sea mammal (i.e. Dolphins).

they mate with the mermen but there is like 1 merman to every 7 mermaids so they take turns every night. Mermen are'nt the energizer bunny and can't keep going and going.
