I saw a video of Muse still doing this in 2004, and I know NIN was still doing it in the 90's
Why don't they all f-f-f-fff-ffffade away and stop trying to cause a big s-ss-ssss-sssensation?!

How much did you pay for the chunk of his guitar,
The one he ruthlessly smashed at the end of the show?
And how much will he pay for a brand new guitar,
One which he'll ruthlessly smash at the end of another show?
And how long will the workers keep building him new ones?
As long as their soda cans are red, white, and blue ones.

Wow ~ I thought that had stopped long ago.
I never liked it ~ I mean, really, what is the point? Ok, back in the 60's when Pete smashed his guitar and Hendrix burned his, they were making a statement. Now, it's just childish.
These musicians need to grow up and treat their audience with a bit of respect ~ we pay to see them play, not to watch them wreck their instruments.

Muse did it in 2004, really? Ha ha, I didn't know about it! Despite the fact I'm really sorry to see all that guitars being destroyed since I love music instruments, I think it's an important part of a gig, especially it was for Muse, in the past. They don't do it anymore, I really don't think that Matt would do it with his favorite Manson guitars! ;)
Well, and if fans like it, why not?...

Why don't they all f-f-f-fff-ffffade away?
... â« Don't try to dig what we all ss-ssay â« ;)
Oh that's just one of the ways a band parades its fame... I would guess that synonymously, it also implies they've got the clout to afford to bash a new guitar on a different PA speaker at every grand performance...but you're definitely right-- it's cliche
Will it ever go away? Not likely. I'm sure this tradition is about as old as the sex and the drugs that goes with rock-n-roll :)

usually it's just something you have to do
like when making a touchdown you smash the ball to the ground
it's just a release when you are soo excited or happy
when you finish a great gig and you get a great response you just have to break something because you feel it's the right thing to do haha
Well usually the people that do this have lots of money to afford a new guitar
It may be cliche but it makes an entertaining show with a grand finish
like cherry topping on an ice cream sundae =D

Generally, those who smash their guitars or instruments are, well, rich. x]
They can just buy a new one tomorrow. o:
Unless, of course, the instrument has some sentimental value, but then I doubt they would smash it.
Either way, I don't think it's going away until someone gets hit in the eye with some shrapnel from the broken intrument. :x

Considering that you can get guitars as cheap as £100, probably never.

Because they're excited, and it makes the crowd happy. I think it's funny to watch =P
As far as I'm concerned, Matthew can do anything he likes. =)

i guess the destroying of guitars demonstrates their appreciation and how bad @ss they feel at the end of a show ... i don't understand it, and it puts me off when i see it.

Becuase, they don't realize that their instruments cost a lot until they destroy!
