... rights abuses then we would simply stop doing business with them.

The suggestion of an Olympic boycott is a sad reflection of the fact that we won't put our money where our mouths are. An Olympic boycott doesn't cost us anything and politicizes an event that is meant as an apolitical sporting event (not that anything is ever completely apolitical but we're supposed to be trying)

It saddens me that we want ethics only when it doesn't hurt us financially - and thats not really ethical.

Your thoughts?

I'm Canadian too and it worries me that our ethical standards which were once enviable are slipping rather badly.

i doubt Canada will boycott a country as huge as China (which includes Hong Kong). if that were to happen, China could:
1) Ban all Canadians from entering it's territories.
2) Send all Canadians packing.
3) Cut off all trade with Canada.
4) Pressure allies to stop doing business with Canada.

With China exporting goods worldwide, a boycott by Canada will not affect it's economy.

China has been conducting themselves this way for a LONG time, and they seem to do ok. It's really not relevant to any other country as no one else is affected by it and doesn't really have the right to dictate how they should live except for their government. Personally, i think we could all learn a lot from their 'no tolerance' approach to crime, drugs, murder, etc. Have you ever been there??

That's impossible. China is the new workshop of the world. Our economy would collapse if we stopped trading with them

If you boycott China, they will boycott you. "If you live by the sword, you will die by the sword"
