America's strategic interests in the Middle East lie with the Arab countries. Israel is a strategic and economic liability. The U.S. government's slavish support of Israel brands us as a hypocrite and is responsible for most of the hostility toward the U.S.

Yep, if Israel thinks Iran poses a threat, then Israel can deal with it.

Chinagirl and others, apparently you are unfamiliar with the constitutional, secular republic of Turkey, which just had elections. It predates Israel by decades, going back to 1922. See "Mustafa Kemal Ataturk", an atheist who led the revolution to establish a new government from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey is far more democratic than Israel.

The entire notion of Israel's "right to exist" is nonsensical- European converts wedging themselves into a Semitic area (that's right, most Israelis are European, not Semitic, so the anti-Semite charge doesn't fly).

Iran's president has never threatened Israel. That was a deliberate mistranslation that even Ahmahdinijead's detractors have debunked.

I'm tired of our money going to them and bribing other dictators in the region. Cut all aid to Israel, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and let them fight it out. If Eisenhower hadn't intervened, it would still be Great Britain's problem.

We are rightly perceived world wide as a super power that acts as Israel's water boy.

Who qualifies as an "AIPAC agent"?

How would you know one way or the other?

I find it quite strange that you call America's support of Israel "hypocritical". Something that is hypocritical means that you do or say something that is against your own point of view, not someone else's. Since America's point of view is a "pro democracy" view, then it makes sense that America should support any democracy or anything that would push a non democracy towards democracy. Thus, if America did NOT support Israel that would be hypocritical.

In fact, America, while being generally pro Israel, was never exclusively so and has supported positions in the past (and present) that can be argued as being not in Israel's best interests. In fact, one can even make the argument that America has taken these positions due to its economic and diplomatic ties to the Arab states.

Besides, wouldn't a world in which America would bow down to the latest "special interest" foreign country for the sake of them "not being upset at them anymore" be very disturbing?

Well, the Iranian leader wants to destroy Israel and Bush is trying to stop that. Then Russia came in and told Bush not to take military actions but he did anyways. Which then made Russia partner up with Iran. Which might lead us to the third World War. We should just leave those Israel on its own. But now that there's a chance of Russia taking over Israel, it's kind of hard to back off. And Russia sure can't back off either because if the U.S. takes over Iran and builds a bomb facility, Russia would be in a lot of trouble and the Russian leader knows that Bush's main object is to take over Iran and help Israel "along with it".

We should somehow negotiate with Russia and pull out of this conflict between Iran and Israel at the same time. Before Russia can finish building the nuclear plant in Iran. Russia is making a nuclear power plant which they indicated that it would be a threat to Russia if such thing happened. This kind of sounds ironic but it kind of makes sense to me. If Russia builds the power plant there first and takes full control of it, they would have nothing to be scared of. But once that happens, I don't think neither the U.S. or Russia would be able to leave and stay away from the conflict. I'm not going to explain anymore because it's going to be too long and it's long enough already, and I don't want people not reading and skipping through what I've wrote.

Your thesis is flawed.

At present, Radical Islam constitutes the greatest threat to the United States, to Europe and to the entire free world.

Israel is a natural ally of the United States and should be supported in every way: militarily, financially and politically.

The alternative is a Middle East run by Iran, and an Iranian nuclear arsenal that will threaten the entire world.

Take your pick.

All of our problems in the Middle East is caused by the US backing of Israel, We will never know peace in the Middle East as long as we back Israel and our $3 billion a year of military aid to that country. Israel has nuclear weapons and we expect the rest of the Middle eastern countries not to protect themselves from that state. The Israeli lobby and the Fundamental Religious right are the moving forces behind the support for Israel

Agents??

I think the reasons for the Arabs being against Israel has to do with Anti-semitism and racism, and our country as a world power should not appease those things to get a benefit. Our country is better than that.

I really do believe that our country should lead this world and be a beacon of economic, and moral light, lead by example.

Does that make me an agent?

Most Israelis don't want the aid, but Labour and Kadima want it as do some factions of Likud, so it keeps comming. Technically Israel began to decline once it got aid since there are a lot of strings attached to the money.

Anyways aid has been cut by a several million each year since Bush has been president.

Anyways if you want to be technical we should also cut aid to Egypt since they are getting almost as much as Israel, Palestinians getting hundreds of millions as are Saudis and Pakistan.

No, it isn't time to cut Israel off. They are only trying to survive in an ever increasing hostile world. Doesn't Arabs have enough land?

It really stems down to one thing. Religion and the sacred places from which they stem from. Israel is a sacred place for Christianity as much as Mecca and Medina is for Islam.

Would you give up your sacred places? I don't think you would.

It's time the racial hatred comes to an end in that region.

Yes. Israel is used as the fodder for the extremists. If we stop giving Israel the 4bn annually we give it we can stop the tide of violence in the Mid East. Also I think the Palestinians deserve parts of their former lands back and control of their water reserves that Israel is siphoning off.
