Humane Society, In Defense of Animals, SPCA, WSPA, PETA? Which one is most effective in improving welfare of animals generally? Everyone has told me that I should donate to "my local shelter" instead. The problem is that my local shelter only has the capability of working to help cats, dogs, gerbils, rodents, etc. I need to know which large organization will best use my $$ for the general protection of all animals. Please provide reasoning/support for your answer. Thank you!

St. Louis, Missouri has 2 of the top rated; the St. Louis Zoo and the St. Louis Humane Society.
The Humane Society was instrumental with helping to find shelters/food, temporary foster homes and locating owners/pets during and after Hurricane Katrina. They also are responsible for huge area of Missouri, which includes, farms/ranches, pet shops, locating puppy mills, finding illegal cock/dog pits. This organization has a high rank among animal charities, higher than other noted organizations.
St. Louis Zoo. Ninety percent of the animals at the zoo on display are endangered or threatened species.
Zoo donations, besides being used to feed, house and educate here in the USA, are also used at the animal's country of origin to teach the people conservation techniques.

SPCA - they always need donations to feed the animals that they have - and there is never enough food etc. They are great at going after those that abuse and mistreat animals which is awesome - I personally can not tolerate an abused animal and have had many strays in my home until I can find them a perm home -

Where we lived before, in PA, there was a "Animals in Distress" shelter, that was wonderful. Here we have a county run Humane shelter.
