Simplifying
27x + -3 = 105
Reorder the terms:
-3 + 27x = 105
Solving
-3 + 27x = 105
Solving for variable 'x'.
Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.
Add '3' to each side of the equation.
-3 + 3 + 27x = 105 + 3
Combine like terms: -3 + 3 = 0
0 + 27x = 105 + 3
27x = 105 + 3
Combine like terms: 105 + 3 = 108
27x = 108
Divide each side by '27'.
x = 4
Simplifying
x = 4

Steve B.'s answer is right on.
You need to get the x by itself on one side of the equation, so it says, x=something. That gives you your answer, of course.
So you do things that undo whatever is being done to "x", like where the equation subtracts 3 from 27x, you could ADD 3 to it. And since any number minus 3 plus 3 is just that number, that would give you 27x on the left side of the equation. Since both sides of the equation are the same (that is what "=" means, isn't it?) if you do THE SAME THING TO BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUATION, both sides must still be equal. So if you add 3 to the left side, you must add it to the right side, too, to keep both sides equal. So it looks like this (in the following example, each new line shows something was done to the line above it):
27x-3=105
.....+3=+3
________
27x+0=108
27x =108 (Now x is just multiplied by 27, so...
/27 = /27 (Now divide both sides by 27)
1x
__ = 4
1
1x = 4
. x = 4
Hope this helps a little. The idea is just to look at the equation and see what it does to x, then just dream up ways to undo it, a step at a time, remembering to do whatever you do to BOTH sides of the equation, so both sides change by the same amount, and so both sides stay equal to each other.
You can email me if you still don't see how to do it, and I can try to explain it with more examples. Just click on my "picture."

Try to get x by it's self, what you do to one side you must do to the other.
27x-3=105
add three to both sides
27x=105+3
27x=108
divide both sides by 27
x=108/27
x=4

Add 3 to both sides; 27x=108. Divide both sides by 27, which leaves you with x=4.

Add three to both sides. Now you have 27x = 108. Divide each side by 27. Now you have the answer. x = 4.
