Fear is the greatest threat to the US.

Fear causes people to do stupid things. It has triggered an over reaction to the WTC bombing that has hurt us in numerous ways.

One overlooked example is how we have shut out foreign students that have enriched our universities and technological research in our fear of terrorism and reversed the international "brain drain" that once favored the US by funneling in the world's best and the brightest.

But by far the biggest damage we have caused to ourselves is in our use of force and torture. It is commonly accepted that these policies are harming us terribly. We haven't even begun to account for all the civilians we have killed in our misguided efforts to dominate the region.

Our strength in foreign policy has always come from admiration for our generosity and fairness. In just one presidential term, Bush II turned our image abroad around from an enlightened empire, dominating but also helping other nations, to an image of a corrupt evil empire, dominating, attacking, and torturing innocents while it deceives its own American public.

Once we as a nation understand we are our own worst "Threat," the issue of China will loom large before us.

Some of them have not forgotten our gunboat diplomacy of a century ago, and how the policies our allies (the English) turned their people into opium addicts to support their lucrative trade during the Opium Wars. These abuses of the past will have to be worked out. (How would you like a Chinese landlord? With their wealth obtained from selling us cheap gaudy plastic toys, they probably could buy up most of our housing stock that's now in default. Or our satelite companies for that matter.)

It is hard to isolate what the greatest threat is to the United States. It could be true that Chinese cyber espionage is a big threat, or something else, but one thing that is not as substantial threat, as is normally advertised, is the threat of terrorism.

Terrorism is a problem, and any rational person would admit this. But, to say it is our GREATEST threat is a notion that was purposely perpetuated by those who could capitalize off people’s fear of terrorism, both politically and monetarily.

The truth is you are more likely to die of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, a toxic environment, or a car accident than you are to die of terrorism. These are the real dangers that our government should address, and spend serious money on. Unfortunately, these issues are too “commonplace” and as a result do not make for convincing campaign platforms.

It should be noted that people who promote the idea of terrorism, being more pervasive and of a more eminent threat, are in and of themselves quasi terrorists. After all, terrorists exact what they want from their targets by instilling fear into them. Those who exaggerate the strength and reach of terrorist movements, such as the neoconservatives, are also coercing the American people to get what they want, by terrifying them. A terrorist isn’t necessarily a bearded man living in a cave. Terrorists are also men with clean pressed suits, who have corner offices in Washington.

The greatest threat to the US is its own people.

Black on black crime in the city, rural and suburban white kids lining up to get their legs blown off in Iraq...Evil rich kids from Connecticut and Texas stealing money from stupid religious southern kids with penchants for gun fetishes...

That right there is a recipe for either a fabulous disaster or the next Bruce Willis movie...
