Yes, you can make money and you will make more than you paid for supplies BUT, what about time? Unfortunately, with crafts that take a lot of time, your "hourly rate" is poor. For example, say you spend 20 hours making a blanket. Most people will seriously balk at buying it for $100, but even at that price, you would be making less than $5.00 an hour for your time after supply expenses.

I recently attended a fair to sell some of my crafts. I had a few items that honestly took me over twenty hours a piece to make. They were intricate, but the final produce was smaller than an index card. My supplies cost was less than $5.00. The time I put into them was worth far, far more than the finished value. I priced them at $45 and figured that at least I had the enjoyment of making them, but that basically meant I was making around $2.00 an hour for very intricate work. At one point, a rather rude woman was handling them and commented they were nice, but not $45 nice. She was completely ignorant of the fact that I spent over 20 hours working with tiny parts to make it! Yes, some customers will understand the time that goes into hand making special items, but the majority of people will wonder why it costs so much more than in a cheap department store.

So, my point is, yes you can make money. And, if it is a hobby you truly enjoy, it may be worth it to make a very low hourly rate, but sadly, with most crafts, you can probably make more money getting a part time job.

If you do want to do well with craft profit, I would suggest something you really enjoy and can put your unique mark on. Also, look for ways to work quickly or items that make more money for the time you put into them.

You may not be able to pay all of your bills with it, but I know from experience that you can earn thousands of dollars a year if you hit it right. You have to find an item that is useful, that people wouldn't be able to make for themselves, and that you enjoy making. Avoid retail yarns or fabrics, because that means everyone else has access to the same materials, and also you will spend too much. Get a tax number so you can tap into wholesale prices.

Go to craft fairs and also use Ebay to start. You should have a website, too. You can start with a freebie site and then graduate to ad-free as the money starts coming in. Give a few away so you can get photos and testimonials.

Yes you can -- depending on what you mean by 'real money.' You have to realize at the outset, however, that it is not going to be 'easy money.' You will have to set aside time and actually make the items to sell. You also need to have time to make an attractive display and sell the things. Using quality components in your articles will also make them easier to sell. Keep your prices on the low side, too, or you'll end up with a garage full of stuff that won't move. Charging extra just because YOU made it only works when selling to your mother and her closest friends, after all.

I've never heard of crochette. Is that a form of crochet or tatting or something halfway in between? If your items are so unique that they'd be unusable (one can only have so many bookmarks or doilies, after all) you may have trouble selling them.
