Best if under $1500. I don't care how it looks or what year it is as it gets from point A to point B. I will be carrying a large backpack and a small tent with a sleeping bag. I'm not looking for a huge bike either, I'm a very small guy. Thanks.

A reliable and inexpensive bike is the Vento V Thunder. It gets around 70 mpg and is sold new for around $3,800. So you can pick one up ebay cheaper. It is a cruiser and has a 250cc engine. The top speed is between 75 - 80 mph. Check it out at vento.com. The bike is American made too.

I,ve made this ride a few times, live in Costa Rica part of the year. So here is some advice from one that's been there. Best size 350 to 500 cc. Bigger then that is not needed. Remember you will be in some places that parts are harder to come by. As most local motorcyclist in Central America are riding on/off road dual purpose bikes I would avoid the big road bikes. Try finding a part for a big bore European bike in a small remote town in northern Costa Rica or replacing an odd size tire. Stick to Japanese bikes like Honda and Yamaha and popular models like the XL and XR. Another plus for riding these on/off road model's is the fact that the roads are not well maintained and a good amount of the riding will be similar to off road use. I,ve done the trip on a 500cc XR, a 650cc XL, German 150cc MZ and a Honda CX 500cc road bike. It is OK to use a bike that is a few years old, say 5 years as that is what is found on the roads throughout C.A. Avoid the latest models 07~08, as parts well be hard to find or nonexistent for them. If you post a question on what to bring for the bike, I will try and answer that as well. Have a great adventure!

i also recommend a kawasaki klr 650. it will handle just about any situation you put it in.i own one and i am only 5'9". it is a very versatile bike that you can outfit any way you like. it is also dependable and pretty powerful. they have been basically unchanged for 20 years until 08. try to pick up a good used one that has been maintained well and you will love it. they have a tall seat height but for street and dirt roads once you get going you are fine.

Consider an older 650-750-850-1000 BMW boxer twin. Dependable, many parts are interchangable between models and years and were sold the world over. Dependable shaft drive, air cooled so no radiators to puncture and leak and easy on gas, especially the smaller engines. BMW has come out with 4 cylinder models lately and lots of BMW riders are trading their old twin cylinders off for them, so there's plenty around.

The airfare would be based on where you are coming from and which country you are going to.The country doesn't have anything to do with determining the cost of airfare. The airline determines airfare based on competition, fuel and equipment costs, air miles, etc. Guatemala,Nicaragua,Honduras and El Salvador are the least expensive, but in the rural areas of Costa Rica,Belize and Panama the living expenses aren't really that much different.Regarding the value of the US dollar,it is what is it is. Although it fluctuates, it makes little difference on a daily basis.Having traveled throughout all the countries in Central America I see very little difference in the cost of the basic necessities. In my opinion, your proficiency in the language has much more to do with what your costs will be in Latin America than any of the things that you have mentioned. juan23

Look, $1,500 is not enough!

Check out Royal Enfield, their bikes are well known, and about as simple as a lawn mower. You will be looking at $3,800.00, and it will get you to Central America.

From my knowledge, that is it!

You need to spend more than $1500.
You need a Kawasaki KLR650, outfitted with luggage.

for a long ride get at least a 500cc or bigger. For that price it will be hard to find anything reliable though. Get a cruiser type not a crotch rocket.
