A rectangular playground is to be fenced off and divided in two by another fence parallel to one side of the playground. 696 feet of fencing is used.

The problem is that if the playground is rectangular, one side can be longer than the adjacent side. Without further information we must assume that the rectangle has equal sides (it is square). So here goes...

There are four sides (lengths) plus an extra length of fence that runs parallel with a side for a total of 696 lineal feet.

Now, take the total length of the fencing (696) and divide it by the number of lengths used (5)
696/5=139.2 feet per length

We know that a(area)=l(length) X w(width)
Therefore, a = 139.2 X 139.2
Total area = 19,376.64 square feet

(At least 2 out of 3 of my functioning brain cells agree on this anwer!)
