*** i was eleven and refused to eat so my heart was dying on me. i went in and out of consciousness... and really should have lost my life.

20x a minute is extremely SLOW. it should have been beating 80x a minute i believe. so with "palpitating," i am using it to describe the irregular heart beat... not racing.

"My heart stopped, and time froze. I became acutely aware of my surroundings, realizing this may be the last time I see them!"

...or something like that.

I was having heart palpitations and knew I was in serious danger. I knew Death was knocking on my door. My heart was beating faster than the wings of a hummingbird. (Or something like that.) (20 times a minutes is actually slower than a normal hearbeat should be under regular conditions, I wouldn't use that phrase.)

Course only you really can write this, for when it is this personal, only you know how it truly feels. However, here is my way of writing it, Normally i would really have to try many ways before deciding how something can be put for its emotional side to be shown. sounds like you went through something very challenging, for that I am truly sorry. How about this --

My heart pounded into a beating rage without mercy, until it put my life in danger, risking to fall into the darkness of death.
