Well, here is my story...
I had a 4 inch oscar, and I added a small algae eater to the tank, and it got eaten about 2 minutes after I introduced the poor fellow to the tank.
If you do get an algae eater, I would recommend getting one thats close to the same size and temperament as your cichlids

Check out this site below. It will answer both your questions easier than what I can. The site also gives general information about each species of cichlids and algae eaters, tank sizes, compatability, etc. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

It depends.
If you have plecos (the bigger species) then you would need a bigger tank. If the Cichlids are bigger and more aggresive than the algae eater, then its more likely that the African Cichlids would eat the algae eater. In my opinion, algae eaters don't have much use, except eat a small amount of algae.
Unless you very fond of algae eaters, I wouldn't get any. Unless of course they are otocinclus catfish.

they might stay to tell the story with them because of the fact that they are small and rapid. yet, that's probable no longer a impressive decision. maximum african cichlids desire severe ph, no longer ordinary water which isn't good for the tetras. And, a pair of weeks isn't long adequate to cycle. The tetras tend to be extraordinarily hardy and would stay to tell the story a cylce extra convenient than some africans would. So in basic terms because of the fact they lived does no longer mean the tank is cycled. you may desire to take the tetras decrease back and get a attempt equipment to envision the water. The assessments assist you to grasp while the tank is cycled and arranged for fish.
