I know of a few.
For ants put out corn starch. They take it back to the nest and it will kill alot of them.
Moth balls keep snakes away.
Beer in a pan will kill slugs.

It really depends on the pest, but one good remedy is 1tbs dish soap, 1tsp lite cooking oil, and water in a 32 oz bottle. This solution will kill most soft bodied insects.

For ants a Chalk line all around the foundation just above grass line

I read in a magazine that vinegar sprayed on ants kills them.. My mother had plants in pots infested with big ants and they were causing problems so we sprayed just plain white vinegar on them... killed them. Plants remained ok.
