It's illegal to discriminate based on gender, nationality, race, age and in some places sexual orientation.

It's bad to taste to insult people based on any of these attributes as well.

But insulting and smearing, slandering people with different political ideology is prime time entertainment these days.

Is discrimination based on ideology far behind? Is it already happening?

That's an interesting question. I haven't really thought about it, but it certainly makes a lot of sense.
I believe that if it is actually happening, it's pretty covert and subliminal. I see some of your answers point to the universities - and perhaps there is some bias toward liberalism, but I don't see any real discrimination taking place.
I believe that there is no definite parallel between criticism and real discrimination. For instance, I am a self-employed conservative, but I wouldn't even consider your political views as an prerequisite for employment. It might even make for a livelier work environment, for instance, if you were to try and convince me that the federal government can fix our health care concerns with a one payer entity. Ugh.
In short, when you pull the curtain closed and punch, push or check the candidate or issue of your choice, it's really no body's business but yours - that's why there's no body looking over your shoulder when you make your choice.

Speaking as a "fat" person, why should it be acceptable? Not all fat people choose to be that way. Some have medical reasons, self esteem, or a heredity reason for it. Discrimination against anyone in any form is wrong. I hate the stereo type that thin people give us. We are not all jolly, slobs, and lazy. I laugh ,but on the inside most times I am sad. I don't want others to see just how sad I am. As for being a slob, I shower daily more than most thin people. 2 to 3, sometimes more a day. I do this because I do not like to be dirty or smell. Lazy? I am far from it, I try to keep as busy as I can. Papa McCain has a good point about exercising. I do exercise in some form on a daily basis. My situation is probably a bit different than most. See, I was born with both my hips dislocated and now being 46 I deal with pain on a daily basis. Still I try to remain active.

Fact of the matter is discrimination is still very very acceptable. From racism all the way through to how ugly someone is. It seems to be a disgusting part human nature and is impossible to erradicate.
