Thanks to everyone answering this. I'm not a very numerical person I'm afraid although I'm fairly OK with imperial measurements. I just can't get my head round decimals although I'm sure they are a lot easier. Yes, I did fail maths....twice Qugel and I spelled with 're' and not 'er' because I'm British not American. Thank you all once again

Metric works on base 10.

milli = 1000
centi = 100
deci = 10

therefore

1 meter = 1000 millimetres, 100 centimetres and 10 decimetres

so 46 centimetres = 460 millimetres (10 times)

It also works the other way (going bigger)

1 kilometre = 1000 metres

now what are the other two measurement designations? These are hardly heard of.

10 metres = ????metre

100 metres = ????metre

Converting metric measurements are fairly easy once you know how. For measurements, the base is meter and the divisions are multiples of 10. here is a quick chart:

kilometer .001
hectometer .01
decameter .1
meter 1
decimeter 10
centimeter 100
millimeter 1000

All of those measurements are equal to each other, and as you can see, to go from one division to the next you can just move the decimal place either right or left depending on which way you're going.in your case you have 46 centimeters and want to convert to millimeters, which is one division below it, so you can just move the decimal place over one place to the right and get 460.

460mm = 46cm.

1mm = 0.001m
1m = 1000mm
centimetre = (centi = 100) so 100cm in 1m

if you dont know cm-mm conversion you can always look on your ruler, or convert it to metres first.

but unless you're american that still uses imperial scales you're failing maths...

oh by the way, i'd like to tell all ppl to spell "metre" and "litre" and "centre" with "re" not "er". because "re" is british.
