Well, no research is really necessary. We could just decide that we know enough and don't feel like learning any more.

But space research has brought us great revolutions in commmunication technologies. Sattelites can enable amazing amounts of communication and they can also provide us with photographic information about our world.

As long as human beings can ask interesting questions about the universe I think there is no reason not to continue with space research.

We probably shouldn't bother trying to send people to other planets right now, because there aren't too many things that people could do that little robots couldn't do more efficiently and much, MUCH more cheaply. You can do a lot more research if you use robots for that reason.

I've put this question myself a thousand times in my childhood. What is the necessity of research on space? Why should we waste billions of dollars on space research and sending rockets, space ships? But later when I grew up, I understood that it was so crucial to lead our life. As the above answers say that if we have relaxed after finding fire, we haven't had electricity now. Suppose some meteor was heading towards Earth, what would it happen if we are not aware of that? Whole mankind will get destroyed. So it is necessary to keep an eye on outer space too. Now we are able to watch programmes made in any country through our TV because of satellites only. It made our life comfortable. So it is necessary to make research on space.

If we are eventually going to travel in space or going to sustain life, long-term, in space (such as living in high earth orbit) then YES, the research is a necessity. We need to know how the special conditions of space (such as weightlessness or exposure to the sun's radiation) affect humans. We also need to know how these conditions affect the machinery we rely on to keep us safe up there (like space shuttles and space stations) and how they affect the plants and animals we might eventually take up there.

To not conduct space research (given the way we are depleting our planet's resources, not to mention the rate at which the human population of this planet is growing) would be short-sighted at best.

Yes of course - it is as important as all other scientific research - it just happens to be of a higher profile than many other areas of science.

Without research in any field, we do not progress, we do not improve our technology or our standard of living.

It is by no means perfect, and there are many things wrong with the world but, without scientific research we would all still be dying of disease in our 20s and 30s, and we wouldn't have non-stick frying pans !

Absolutely not !! In the final analysis it is a total waste of money (so what else is new?) It serves no purpose but to satisfy the misplaced curiosity of man. There are other uses right here for those gazillions of dollars. Clean out your own latrine before you think about building one in someone else's backyard.

actually depends on the type of research...by studying other planets and other types of suns we can guestimate the evolution of our own and the lifespan of our solar system. We know from studying other suns that our sun will eventually shrink and finally implode but we're talking millions of years before that happens.and we also know how the earth evolved and that other planets of similiar classes can exist...I prefer to think that the research is because space is the final fronteir and humans are naturally curious creatures...oh to boldly go...
