They may be trying to determine if you have any conflicting interests that would be detrimental to their operations. If you have a significant financial interest in a competitor, they may doubt your ability to be a loyal employee of theirs.

As to social organizations, if, for example, you belong to a club that excludes Jews, or blacks, or women (and such clubs continue to exist), they may decide that you are not worth the publicity embarrassment that is likely to cause.

Professional organizations are just what they say, professional organizations. For example: A person in Human Resources might belong to a group called the Society for Human Resource Management. An Accountant may belong to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

I would not put down social organizations as they are, as they indicate, social and do not answer the question being asked...

I take this as what professional organizations related to the job you are applying for - or - what volunteer organizations. Such as if you are applying for a secretarial position - do you belong to a secretary club of some sorts - professional womens club or otherwise.

Social / volunteer organization / clubs would be such as Lions International, Rotary, Kawains, Shirners - all of whom stand for what is right. Those associations are such wonderful places to volunteer & shows to a potential employer that you have a sense of community and realize the value of volunteer relationships.

I would answer.

The professional organization of affiliates may have a conflict of interest with the potential new employer. On the other hand it now may be illegal to ask this question as it could lend itself to discrimination.
