It's a Gateway.

Purchased August 2006. What is the best place to have this done at...a big box store like Best Buy, or a small business that does laptops? Also, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

Thanks!

well nothing if you want to do it yourself. all you need to do is save all the files you want to keep on a disc, and reinstall windows xp (or whatever operating system you use)

The Geek Squad at Best Buy? You have got to be joking? A bunch of puke kids, barely making what a McDonald's french-fry chef makes. Whose primary job is to sell you the highest mark-up Anti-Virus or Anti-spyware that Best Buy happens to be pushing this week. No thanks.

"Zenitram asks:
"I am a lead technician at a company that repairs computers for various vendors. Many of our systems are from Best Buy's Geek Squad. Based on the systems Geek Squad sends us, it makes me wonder what, if anything, do they actually do? We get systems that have issues that we simply shouldn't have to work on, like: installing device drivers, OS reloads, and reseting CRUs (Customer Removable Units). Additionally, we get systems that are misdiagnosed such as: bad hard drive when a system has faulty RAM; no POST when it simply won't boot into Windows; or no boot when it won't power on at all. So, what is the scope of technical repair that Geek Squad techs do?"

Your lap top should have come with either a set of restore disks or a restore partition on the hard drive. If you have the disks, just run them. If your restore is on the hard drive, (usually drive "D"), then click on the drive letter and follow the instructions for doing a restore. This will restore your system back to box fresh.

If you have the system recovery CD's, do it yourself is not too hard (you spend your time and save money). The time it takes to re-install everything depends on your skill level. If you are going to get someone to do it for you, local computer shop is easier and faster. Doing this with system recovery disks is about as long as 3 hours.
