I want to free up some space on my computer and have been thinking about getting a few of those portable hard drives that I've been seeing that are going on sale next Friday. For the record I've been thinking about the 80, 120, and 250Gig hdd from Western Digital to store my music, games, videos, etc., and freeing up my main hdd

What I need to know is that if I put my entire MAME collection on one of the portable hdd, and than hook it up when I want to play one of the games, will the hard drive be running constantly while playinng the game or will my main CPU be the one doing all the work?

The reason I ask is because I don't want to burn out the portable hard drives since they don't have fans to keep them cool.

Thanks for any info or insight.

Since it's emulation, more likely than not it's your processor that is doing the work while the hard drive's work is minimal since MAME loads all the necessary files on one go.

Good for you in more ways than one.

1) Place the MAME emulator on the hard drive in its own folder. then make a folder named ROMs and place all your roms there. I recommend 120GB for MAME and all the roms, bios, and chd files.

2) Keep a MAME emulator on your main hard drive also. When at home you can just click on the one on your main drive. And if you want to take the external drive to a friends (work) or where ever you have everything with you. ***REMEMBER WHEN YOU PLACE THE ROMS IN A NEW LOCATION TO OPEN MAME AND EDIT THE DIRECTORIES SO MAME CAN FIND THEM***

3) I have to admit My computer has 2 80gb and 1 200gb internal hard drives for my applications, games, back up, photos, and editing programs. I have 2 120gb external hard drives 1 is for MAME and other emulators (I will be getting a 500gb this friday to take its place). and 1 is for my Music. The mobility if the external drives is great.

Just a note I have a MAME arcade cabinet I made and it only has a 20gb hard drive so I would connect the external hard drive to it and play a lot more games but was able to connect the HD to my computer to edit roms and upgrade mame versions.

Good luck

If they are on sale, get a 500 Gig, better deal and you'll be happier in the long run. Most likely it will be connected via USB and Windows will see it as another drive, assign a drive letter visible in My Computer, and it will run whenever you work with anything on that drive, same as your box hard drive. These drives are designed to dissipate the heat, I have one or more running all the time.

All programs are installed on your box hard drive and operate from there. Use the portable for photos, music, storage and so on.

Make it a great day!

Hi,
To get Mame32 for free you can click here on the link: http://j.mp/1p0CmvS

MAME allows users to play a huge number of arcade games in an easy way just emulating them. Remember the classics you played years ago.

Your extra hard drive is only for storage, the work on running the programs will be on your CPU.
