It seems like after a year and a half, they start leaking at the connections. Not where they screw on to the spigot but right under that. What am I doing wrong?

replace the washers every year and make certain the hose isnt cross threaded. also be careful not to bend/dent the brass fittings. but your issue is all about washers. they wear out and have to be replaced reguarly. just buy a pack of 'em and everytime a hose starts to leak as you describe, replace the washer....

Just depends on the type hoses you are buying. Cheap hoses do not last. I pay $30 for a 50 foot hose made of rubber and they last for years. Any plastic hose will be affected by the sun. Since the area where the connections are is streched when the ends are put in, this is usually the first place they leak.

Leaving them full of water in the winter is bad.

Stressing hose by putting a sharp bend at spigot is bad.

Buy the more expensive hoses. thier easier to wrap up and last.

No you are not alone. My husband keeps buying these cheap one that get holes in them simply by pulling them across the yard. I always put them away in winter so water in them not an issue.

Yours is a common problem with hoses. Tip: buy your next hose(s) at Sears. THEY ARE GUARANTEED FOR LIFE, UNCONDITIONALLY.
