The "old" EU is essentially border free. There probably will still be border posts for Bulgaria, and countries east of Austria/Italy/Germany. Also Switzerland (not EU) has border posts. You do need a passport or other valid ID in all of the countries though. and may be asked for it at any time.

There are border controls because France is part of the Schengen area and Bulgaria is not. So crossing borders regulation will depend on your nationality. If you are EU member citizen you just need to show your National ID or passport and that's it. If you're not, you may need visa.

Depends which way you are driving. If you are a EU citizen then there will be a border control at the points where you leave the Schenghen area and where you leave the EU area. So, if you are driving through Serbia, definitely, there will be several border controls - possibly, Austria - Hungary, Hungary - Serbia, Serbia - Bulgaria.

The French( and Germans) still have limits on Poles, Latvians etc working in their countries - so I would guess that goes for the Bulgarians too. From 2009 all of Bulgaria and Romania will be free to come and work here - that will leave Bulgaria and Romania empty - with cheap properties to buy they will soon fill up with British property speculators.
