If it's an inkjet printer, you really should turn it off as this parks the print head, keeping it from clogging.
For laser printers, you can leave them on as most now employ a power save mode.

Let say for a moment you are using an inkjet printer for home use. You should keep the printer turned off if for no other reason to conserve your ink. When the printer is off the printer head is placed into park mode and you inkjet wells are properly closed and no longer exposed, thus reducing the amount of air that flows into the printer head which would dry out your ink more quickly if the printer were left on.

It depends on the printer. Some actually clean out the jets when you turn them off. Most modern printers uses tiny amounts of energy when not in use, and will perform periodic maintenance activities. Electronic equipment can be stressed when powered on and off, reducing their life expectancy. The idea of reducing a carbon footprint by turning things off doesn't work when considering life expectancy, and the resources needed to produce another printer.
It really depends on your printer. I would ask the manufacturer what they recommend for your specific device.

Most people do not turn off their printers, ever! We have over a thousand printers at work and they NEVER get turned off, except when the power goes off, then they auto come back on when the power comes back on. They last forever!

I not think it matter. I use an old B&W Dot Matrix. I turn mine off as most everything I do can be e-mailed now and I do very little printing. Pictures I e-mail to Wal-Wort or Walgreen's and have prints made if I want. I have a separate scanner and it off too most of the time.

A lot of printers have sleep modes. When not in use they hibernate and do not use much power. Its safe to leave on.
