Right now the Core 2 series from Intel is the best out there.

The Pentium is obsolete although Intel have been using the Pentium Dual Core brand to sell their low end processors (they're actually pretty decent processors though) while the Pentium 4 and Pentium D (a dual core P4) are also obsolete as well as tending to run rather hot.

The Athlon is better than the Pentium 4 and Pentium D but not as good as the Core 2 (or Core 2 based processors). For the performance you get a Core 2 will run a lot cooler than an Athlon although the Athlon will be cooler than a P4.

After using both brands of processors I prefer AMD over Pentium. Newer Pentiums are starting to lack in the performance area compared to AMD's. Plus like a previous user stated they are designed to run cooler and are easier to over-clock should you feel so inclined. I wouldn't pressure you to purchase a AMD over a Pentium; it all just depends on your needs. A Athlon would be the preferred card for Gaming, but if you just want a desktop PC Pentium is suitable.

PC magazine says they are neck and neck.

Pentium develops a new processor and in no time at all AMD duplicates their effort.

Right now duo core and quad core are the big talk since they make multitasking easier.

One editor said the best deal is always to buy the "next one down from the latest". For example a new chip just out has a speed of 5.6Mhz. Of course this is wonderful but the price is phenomenal. The best deal then would be to buy the next one down since its price dropped when it was superceded by the new one.

So the answer to your question is "you will not be disappointed with either AMD or Pentium. Both are innovative giants in their field.

Intel, (Pentium you referred to is a product of them), and AMD have been the two major competitors for years. There are new 'faces' coming around, but I would stick with one of these two manufacturer's. Which is best? This has been an argument for year's, as the two are coming out with refinement's for processor's every day,(seems like it anyway,LOL!). At the very moment it seems Intel's Quad core processor's are in the lead, AMD is 'Hot' on the trail, but I'm sure AMD fan's will argue this,(and I'll listen!)

I am not an engineer nor qualified to speak on that level, but I can honestly say that of the 4 or 5 AMD's I have had over the years, they certainly worked well, didnt stutter and outlasted fans and peripherals.

The Pentiums did too...but, all things being equal, that tells me that the AMD must be as good as the Pentium, for someone on a laymans level like me.

Both are powerful, but I prefer the AMD to the Pentium, because it's designed to run cooler which ultimately means that the processor will run more efficiently over a longer period of time.

Well, it depends on what amount you want to spend. The Athlon X2's are less performing than Intel Core 2 Duos, but cost a lot less. Great for budget builds.

Iam using a AMD athlon Desktop, in my suggestion AMD
is computer which supports graphics very much. And it is
made to play games(athlon) . But comparing to intel , Amd
is a poor company. If we want to play game in intel with very much graphics we want to add a graphic card into it.

If you do alot of multi-tasking projects, for work purposes, use Pentium, but if you want something that can multi-task in style and play every game out there to boot, AMD all the way
