Yes, they do need to stop for fuel. Their pumping system isn't designed to fuel individual vehicles. Have you ever seen the pump lines on those big fuel tankers? Its like a 3 inch diameter hose. The diameter of the nozzle at the end of the hose on the fuel pump at a filling station is maybe 1/2 inch diameter.

Plus, what would stop the driver of a tanker truck from offering to fill up friends diesel powered vehicles with the cargo he is transporting?

I wondered the same thing. I'm betting they do have to stop since the fuel in the tank is a product that someone is looking to get paid for and it's part of some companies inventory.
From an accounting perspective, the fuel in the tanker is revenue and the fuel in the truck is expense.

There you go being logical again. First you forgot to look at the station owners, they have to pay for what you put into your truck to del. to them. then the Fed. & State taxes get added and collected at the pumps, so if you take a drop of it before or after you del the load, it is call frud.

I can stop and give you a gal if you have run out of fuel on the shoulder of the road, unless it is from my tank and not the one for resale.

I use to ask that question too!

They would probably get their fuel at the refinery or bunker that they fill the tanker at.
