Yep, Jeffrey is right. I can't remember which movie it was in, but M told him to turn the Beretta in and exchange it for the Walther PPK, due to less jamming.

Yes more stopping power,
Boothroyd (Q) tells Bond that a Berreta's fine for in a ladies handbag.
Also because of jamming, Bond had apparently spent some time in Hospital the last time he used one
