Strengthens them as opposed to wearing shoes? Not sure, it is good for the entire skeletal alignment, knees, back, the feet themselves... and there's more stability; athletic shoes, even those claiming to be supportive, can actually increase the odds of lateral injury. But that's more of a balance/stability/increased leverage effect, influencing the risk of such an injury when stepping on an uneven surface, rather than a gradual strengthening or weakening of the ankle.

Btw, your foot does not get 'wider' from going barefoot any more than women from the 17th century got a 'wide waist' from not wearing a corset. That's how our feet are supposed to look, but *shoes* cause them to be more *narrow*.

A 2006 study found that shoes may increase stresses on the knee and ankle, and suggested that adults with osteoarthritis may benefit from walking barefoot, though more study is requird to elucidate the factors that distribute loads in with-shoe and barefoot walking.

A 1992 correlational study also found that children who wore shoes were three times more likely to have flat feet than those who did not, and suggested that wearing shoes in early childhood can be detrimental to the longitudinal arch of the foot.

A 1991 review article found that barefoot walking supported optimum foot development, and the best use of shoes are to protect the foot from injury rather than for correction of problems.

Other doctors disagree, and believe shoes have use in correcting mild deformities such as flat feet.

Uhm, I don't know. But with babies they tell you to let them go barefoot as much as possible when they're learning to walk. But that may just be because it's easier. Sorry, I have no idea. Maybe a high top sneaker would strengthen your ankle. That's what they told my husband when he lost 1/2 of his foot and his tendon was tight.

No, I don't think going barefoot strengthens your ankles.

I've been wearing shoes for 35 years and have never had ankle problems.

Also, I've stepped on broken glass with shoes and it didn't bother me. Did it bother you barefoot? Did it help your ankles?

I can't see how it would.
walking up and down stairs is a good way to strengthen them, or going from tip toe to heal, back and forth.

It depends on what you are walking on.
But walking barefoot on ground does help you healthwise.
