Yes, having my house burn to the ground two days prior to Christmas some years ago DID put a damper on my festive spirit.

Well, perhaps it was not entirely ruined, but I spent Christmas of 1989 in the hospital with a broken leg. That was pretty nasty, but the Rotary Club did send Santa to visit me, and he brought me a stocking full of little things. And the hospital (Dominican Santa Cruz; long may they prosper) even gave us a glass of wine with dinner!

Still, I sure would have rather been at home and walking around on two healthy legs.

I almost did by having a baby at 6.10pm on Christmas Eve but the lovely doctors said i could go home so a disaster was averted.... there was one year that i got up at 6am Christmas Day after a heavy night, opened all the pressies with the kids and went back to bed to sleep until 4pm to sleep off the vodka excess - again almost disaster but everyone was fed and watered by 10.00pm! Oops

Yeah. I got arrested Christmas eve. My parents had kicked me out of the house, so I stayed in a house they owned in a different part of town. Well, Christmas eve, while I was in the shower, four cops burst in with their guns pointed at me, thinking someone was robbing the place. Don't know WHY you would rob an EMPTY HOUSE. But they arrested me, and my dad had to come pick me up the next day. That Christmas dinner was really awkward....

It's usually the job of my sister, who gets ridiculously Christmassy. She has high expectations for the day and sets a rigid schedule and plans everything. It always goes wrong. The number of meals that have been highlighted with cries of "it's ruined"...

Personally I'd rather crash out with a box of crackers and cheese. Maybe it's my fault then.

Not me, but....

My father, who was so totally drunk that he insisted on taking a photo of our family round the dinner table, and then fell on the Christmas tree, dragging the tablecloth down with him, Christmas dinner and all.

And my brother, who decided to return all his Christmas gifts to family. One of his 'No one is taking an notice of me' tantrums.

And I could tell you sooo much more....our family Christmases were nightmares when I was a child.

xx

I was really ill and ended up in hospital. I felt like I had just completly ruined Christmas that year.

Almost - I set fire to the garage (which was wooden) that was joined to our house and the whole lot nearly went up.
The house was OK thanks to the firemen but I wasnt altogether popular as it happened on Christmas Eve.
ps I was 12 at the time.

I think after 42 years being together some things just have to go wrong but they are forgotten which I think is best
